Pharmacovigilance screening for veterinary drugs in Burdur, Denizli and Muğla provinces

Abstract (EN)

Pharmacovigilance, also known as "drug safety", is the science and activity concerned with the detection, assessment and prevention of Adverse Drug Reaction (ADR). Within the scope of this study, pharmacovigilance screening for veterinary drugs was conducted in Burdur, Denizli and Muğla. In addition, research was conducted to determine the pharmacovigilance awareness of the veterinarians, the possible methods that can be applied to the veterinarians to understand the importance of pharmacovigilance, and the methods that will facilitate the reporting of ADR. The study population is the veterinarians working in the field on cattle and sheep in the provinces of Burdur-Muğla-Denizli. It was carried out in the form of seeking answers to the questionnaire questions through face-to-face interviews with the veterinarians in the sample (n=103). The questionnaire to be filled in was prepared in a way to consist of 2 main parts. In the first main part, there are classical pharmacovigilance form and classical research questions. In the second main part, there are calibration questions and expertise research questions used in the Structured Expert Judgment (SEJ) method. One of SEJ's sub-methods, "Cooke's classical model" was used. 92.23% of ADR notifications are cattle (n=95), 4.85% are sheep (n=5) and 2.91% are dogs (n=3). Antibacterial products (n=53, 51.46%) were the leading drug groups that cause ADR. Among the antibacterial drugs, beta-lactam antibiotics are the group that causes the most ADR (n=33). ADR reporting (n=36) in products containing vitamin-mineral-amino acid was the highest after antibiotics. There were only 4 ADR notifications for Nonsteroidal antiinflammatory drugs. For other products, the ADR notification is 10. No ADR notification was made for antiparasitic products. Mild, moderate and severe anaphylaxis (n=101) was observed most frequently in the ADR report originating from all drug groups. It was determined that the majority of veterinarians, 66.99%, had never reported ADR before. The most effective methods in increasing ADR notifications are respectively giving "premium" to veterinarians per ADR notification (88.0%), mobile phone application (81.5%), drug tracking system (ITS) information screen (74.1%) and prospectus/packaging. The most prominent methods for increasing ADR notification are the Barcode application we recommend (median expectation 13.91%, range 2.53 to 56.72), mobile phone application (median expectation 11.63%, range of -3.79 to 63.48) and ITS application (median expectation 7.89%, range -6.37 to 32.93). There are very few veterinary ADR notifications in our country and the notification system should be greatly improved. In order to increase ADR notification, the importance and value of pharmacovigilance should be explained to veterinarians and the parties involved in veterinary pharmacovigilance, and policies should be developed to facilitate ADR notification.
