Burhanuddin en-Nasafi's God understanding -Names and attributes-

There have been some discussions about divine attributes since early periods in the history of Islamic thought. The spread and expansion of the Muslim geography in the Middle East and other regions over time made it necessary to live together with different religions and cultures in the conquered regions. In this context, people have acquired a religion and belief in Allah according to the culture they belong to. Our study aims to reveal the issues of proof of the existence and unity of Allah, the essence/self, the name and the attributes, based on the thoughts of Burhanuddin an-Nasafī, (d. 687/1289), who a member of the Ash'ari tradition, and in this regard, Nasafī's it is about what kind of understanding God has. In addition, after examining the historical background of the idea of divinity and the related thoughts of theological schools, it tries to determine where Nasafī stands in these discussions. While doing this, an in-depth method was followed by focusing on Nasafī without going into the details of divine attributes and the views of the sects on the subject in detail. This study, which examines Nasafī's "understanding of God", consists of introduction, conclusion and four chapters. In the introduction part, besides the subject, importance, purpose, method and sources of the research, information about Nasafī's life, scientific personality, the period in which he lived and the political, social, scientific and cultural characteristics of the geography are given. In the first part; Ontological and cosmological evidences used by Nasafī about demonstration of necessary being are discussed. In the second part; Nasafī's thoughts on the names of Allah, the name-musamma and the name-attribute relationship, the classification of the names, the tawkîf or qiyasism of the names, the ism-i a'zam, kalima-i tawhid and asmâ-i husnâ his thoughts on the issues ofwere evaluated. In the third chapter; zavâid (concepts that are debatable whether to be used about Allah) and asmâ-i zât are discussed. In the fourth chapter; Nasafī's approach to Allah's attributes, classification of attributes, words indicating attributes, ru'yetullâh and ef'âlullâh (husin and kubuh) are analyzed. In the conclusion part, it is revealed that Nasafī has a God idea that combines theology and mysticism, which puts the Ash'ari doctrine in the center, but also puts forward different ideas.
