Factors affecting farmers' agricultural insurance preferences in Gürsu district of Bursa

This study was carried out in order to develop opinions and suggestions in terms of determining the current situation, expectations, the risks that worry them the most, the economic and social benefits, and the problems encountered in terms of their approaches to agricultural insurance in the Gürsu District of Bursa Province. It is aimed to have an overview of agricultural insurance, which is a kind of risk sharing method in agricultural production, which is most affected by natural, social and economic risks, and to examine the factors affecting the agricultural insurance processes of farmers in Gürsu District of Bursa province. Within the scope of the research, a survey was conducted with 181 farmers in Gürsu District. According to the results of the research, it has been determined that the average age of the farmers is 45,6 years, their average agricultural experience is 33,28 years, the average size of the farms is 29,77 decares, and the average number of the parcels is 6,45. It has been determined that the most worrying risk factor for farmers is climate events with 71.85%, and hail precipitation is the most common climatic event with 53.60% among climate events. It has been determined that 97.20% of the farmers have taken out agricultural insurance before, and 93.30% of them have taken out insurance due to the effects of past losses. Farmers listed the most important problems regarding agricultural insurance as unrealistic damage assessment procedures, failure to cover real losses in claims payments, and expensive insurance premiums. It has been determined that the preparation of policies to increase the income of the farmers and the determination of the losses in accordance with the truth, instead of state support for insurance premiums, will have a significant impact on the spread of agricultural insurance practices.
