Abstract (EN)

Prediabetes is defined by higher than normal plasma glucose levels but not high enough to reach the criteria to be classified as diabetes. The frequency of prediabetes is higher than diabetes and its probability to lead to diabetes is higher if necessary cautions are ignored. According to data from Turkish Diabetes Epidemiology Study (TURDEP), prediabetes prevelance was 6.7% in Turkey in 2002, whereas this went up to 30.4% in TURDEP 2 data repeated 10 years later. It is getting more important to diagnose prediabetes to prevent diabetes and diabetes related chronic complications. In this study, we aimed to investigate the changes in metabolic parameters among patients who use or do not use medication and analyze the risk factors, symptoms, medication use, diet and exercising conditions for patients diagnosed with prediabetes registered to Education Family Health Center (EFHC) which is part of Bursa Uludag University. This study was conducted by questionnaire work through calling 114 patients who are diagnosed with prediabetes and registered to Ertugrul 36th EFHC. During the phone interviews, risk factors, medication use and diabetes symptoms associated with prediabetes were questioned. The anthropometric measures and laboratory work analysis of patients were saved retrospectively through registered examine notes. Results showed that more than 86% of participants has BMI higher than 25 kg/m2 and doctors gave the most information on life style change related suggestions such as diet and exercise. In this study, we observed that there is a significant decrease in FBS and HbA1c values among patients using medication whereas this decrease is insignificant for patient that do not use medication. Moreover, there is a significant decrease in HOMA values between the last and the first measurements for patients using medication. Literature works show that the prediabetes should be diagnosed at the earliest stage and the progression to diabetes should be prevented by suitable approaches. In the light of the data resulted from this study, we can speculate that metformin could be a treatment option for prediabetes. Key words: Prediabetes, FBS, HbA1c, HOMA, family health center.
