Compound parabolic concentrators (CPC's) are widely popular solar collector type among concentrated solar power applications. These collectors basically are comprised of reflector and absorber surfaces. Differently from parabolic trough collectors, it does not involve a sun-tracking mechanism. It is possible with CPC solar panels to obtain hot fluid in terms of domestic and industrial use. In this study, a CPC which has an evacuated tube heat pipe as absorber, was designed and optically analyzed. The reflector of the CPC was truncated from evacuated tubes horizontal axis. A model, which is made of an absorber and a reflector, was optically analyzed by ray analysis so that an optical efficiency for rays at different incidence angles, was calculated. Then, a prototype CPC solar panel in which designed CPC was used, was installed. Utilization of evacuated tube heat pipe decreased the amount of working fluid in the solar panel and the step in time was also shortened. In the experiments, the solar irradiation on the collector, inlet and outlet temperature of water was measured. The solar energy to collector's surface and energy transferred to water was compared and collector's efficiency was calculated at experimental conditions. In conclusion, using the instant values of optical efficiency and solar irradiation, the solar energy on surface of the absorber tube of CPC was calculated during the day. Calculations were repeated monthly and annual thermal energy production capacities were obtained. The results show that energy absorption capacity of evacuated tube with reflector is more than twice that of evacuated tube without reflector.
