Abstract (EN)
This thesis deals with research on the restoration and re-functioning of the historic Leon Trotsky House in Büyükada, Istanbul. Lev Trotsky House is an important historical and cultural building and was the residence of Lev Trotsky during his exile between 1929 and 1933. This thesis examines the historical and architectural features of the house and discusses the restoration process. In the first chapter of the research, the historical and architectural importance of Lev Trotsky House is emphasized. The historical background, architectural features and cultural value of the house are analyzed. The second chapter focuses on the importance and necessity of restoration. The importance of conservation and restoration of historical buildings for the sustainability of cultural heritage is emphasized. In the third chapter, the restoration process of Lev Trotsky House is discussed in detail. Survey and restitution studies, structural analysis and material analysis are emphasized. In the fourth chapter, the practical stages and methods of restoration are analyzed. Techniques, materials and workmanship details to be used in the restoration process are discussed. In the fifth chapter, strategies and practices for the re-functioning of the Lev Trotsky House are discussed. Various suggestions are presented on how the house can be re-functionalized in accordance with modern needs while respecting its cultural and historical values. In the conclusion and discussion chapter, the successes and challenges of the restoration are evaluated and recommendations for future restoration projects are presented. vii This thesis aims to contribute to the efforts to preserve the historical and architectural value of the Lev Trotsky House and to pass it on to future generations. The research on the restoration process and repurposing strategies makes an important contribution to the preservation of historical buildings and the sustainability of cultural heritage.
