The mediator role of social intelligence in the relationship between grandiose narcisistic personality traits with forgiveness and revenge

In this study, it was aimed to examine the mediating role of social intelligence in the relationship between grandiose narcissistic personality traits with forgiveness of others and situations which are the the sub-dimensions of forgiveness, and avoidance and revenge, which are the sub-dimensions of revenge. In addition, it was examined whether the sub-dimensions of grandiose narcissism, forgiveness, revenge and social intelligence variables were related to each other and whether they differed according to gender. The study group of the research consists of male and female students attending the faculties located in the central campus of Uludağ University in the 2017-2018 academic year. In this framework, the sample of the research consists of students attending 13 different departments affiliated to Uludag University's faculties of Education, Engineering, Science - Literature and Economics and Administrative Sciences. Within the scope of the research, 1100 volunteer students were reached. Of these students, 564 (55.8%) were female and 446 (44.2%) were male. 321 (31.8%) of the students are educated in Education, 228 (22.6%) Engineering, 286 (28.3%) Economics and Administrative Sciences and 175 (17.3%) Science and Letters faculties. Research data were collected with the Narcissistic Personality Inventory, the Heartland Forgiveness Scale, Transgression Related Interpersonal Motivations Scale, and the Tromso Social Intelligence Scale. In the analyzes made, it was seen that social intelligence played a mediating role in the relationship between grandiose narcissistic personality traits and the sub-dimensions of forgiveness and revenge. However, it was observed that the variables of grandiose narcissism, social awareness, forgiveness, revenge and avoidance differed according to gender. In addition, it was revealed that the variables of grandiose narcissism and forgiveness of self and others, social intelligence, social information process, avoidance and revenge are in significant relationships. The findings were discussed in the context of the relevant literature.
