Psychological realities and their roles in the construction of magical realism: A study on Gabriel García Márquez's A hundred years of solitude and Tim Burton's big fish

The main purpose of this study is to examine A Hundred Years of Solitude and Big Fish, which are important examples of magical realism, in the context of psychological reality layers. Since the works contain magical realistic elements and expressions as a common feature, the roles of psychological realities in the fiction of the work have been examined. In addition to the definition of magical realism and its relationship with other genres, how it is represented in literature and film is presented in the First Chapter by creating a theoretical framework. The Second Chapter; It was created from the studies of Sigmund Freud and Carl Gustav Jung in the context of psychoanalysis in order to introduce the psychological realities involved in the construction of the magical realist fiction. In this chapter, parallel to the layers of reality in magical realism, the simultaneity of the consciousness levels is expressed. It has been claimed that magical realism and psychological realities basically have common points by bringing together different levels of reality. Finally, in the Third Chapter, work reviews are included as a result of all theoretical definitions. A Hundred Years of Solitude by Gabriel García Márquez and Tim Burton's Big Fish are analyzed in terms of the roles of magical realist and psychological elements in fiction. The intertwining of magical realism and psychoanalysis has been studied through concrete examples in works through theoretical studies.
