Investigation of the effect of contemporary additions on energy performance of historical building

Energy demand has increased intensively due to factors such as increasing industrialization activities, technological developments and population density on a global scale. This demand has led designers to energy-efficient building design. Energy efficient preservation of historical buildings, which reflect our cultural identity and carry the traces of the past to the present, is an important issue. Decisions and interventions taken during the renewal and strengthening of these structures, which were worn out and destroyed in their historical processes, gain importance here. The application of contemporary additions in restoration has recently increased due to reasons such as the redesign of the spaces of historical buildings that have not reached the present day or the need for a new post-functional space. In this study, it is aimed to show the effect of these modern additions included in the historical building on the energy performance of the building with a sample study. For this purpose, energy analyzes were carried out through the simulation program (Design Builder) on the historical Süleyman Pasha Bath, which is located in Kocaeli and gained a contemporary addition after the restoration. Simulations were applied on the stone, which is the original material of the bath, and the glass material applied after the contemporary addition. By entering five different climate data for both materials, the effect of contemporary addition on the climate factor was also examined. When the results were examined, it was observed that the annual total energy load increased in all climate regions after the contemporary addition intervention. It has been concluded that although the original state of the building is larger in volume, the energy consumption is lower and the contemporary additional application negatively affects the energy performance of the building. Although the contemporary addition applied to the building is suitable for its purpose in terms of reflecting its own period and giving the historical structure a function, it is seen that the energy demand of the building increases. In the contemporary addition design phase, energy efficiency should also be considered and a decision should be made as a result of various analyzes. The application of the most effective materials and construction techniques in accordance with contemporary additional design approaches gains importance in terms of the sustainability of the building.
