Abstract (EN)

In the beginning, humans settled in areas suitable for living, and with the transition to a sedentary lifestyle, they began to design their living spaces according to human scale, thereby creating cultural spaces. From the earliest stages of this journey, sculpture has accompanied human life within these spaces. The perception of space, shaped by the understanding and meaning-seeking of each era, has been reflected in the art of sculpture, evolving throughout history to reach the present day. Although the interaction between sculpture and space has varied throughout history, their relationship has never been separate or coincidental. In pre-modern periods, space was not merely considered as a void or a physical location, but as a meaningful phenomenon in which human existence was situated. In the modern and contemporary periods, artists have strived to make space and the viewer's experience an integral part of art and sculpture. Artistic approaches that emerged with modern art—such as installation, land art, and site-specific works— have transformed the relationship between contemporary sculpture and space into an experiential domain. During this period, sculpture has acquired a structure that invites direct interaction. In contemporary art, sculpture becomes meaningful through its spatial context and surroundings, often characterized by its temporary or interventionist nature. While it may be argued that the relationship contemporary sculpture establishes with space blurs the boundaries of both sculpture and art—as with many other relational categories in contemporary art—this ambiguity can also be seen as part of art's dynamic nature. The transformation observed in contemporary sculpture IV is not only a formal, technical, or technological shift, but also a process of rethinking and redefining space and sculpture. This expanding scope of form and content in contemporary sculpture often creates ambiguities about the definition of sculpture itself, raising questions about where sculpture begins and ends. However, such questions are indicators of the continuous change and transformation inherent in art and, in fact, demonstrate that from the primitive period to the contemporary era, sculpture is an art discipline that cannot be considered independently of the concept of space.
