The use of alternative materials in contemporary art and their impact on the creative processes of contemporary Turkish artists

This study looks into the use of non-traditional materials in modern art, focusing on how Turkish artists have used them from the 2000s to the present. The study looks into how material, which was once seen as just something that held the artwork together, has changed into a powerful form of expression that shapes both the form and meaning of modern art practices. In this context, the works of some artists, like Ayşe Erkmen, Füsun Onur, Ahmet Güneştekin, and Refik Anadol, have been looked at to see how they used different kinds of materials, in another words, alternative materials in their art and how they took different methods to use these materials in their artwork. The study's results show that different materials are not only technical choices, but also ways to express ideas, remember things, and to highlight political and social issues. By means of trying new things, artists have increased their ability to express themselves by using both traditional and non-traditional materials in their work. This breaks the lines between different art forms and engages audiences in new approaches. The case studies show how Turkish artists use global artistic techniques but approach them in a way that fits Turkish culture and history. In conclusion, this study argues that the use of diverse materials in modern Turkish art reflects the artists' engagement with global contemporary art practices, while simultaneously maintaining a distinct artistic expression grounded in local cultural and historical contexts. Turkish modern art fits into the larger conversation of global art practices because it uses different materials as tools for ecology, social critique, and national identity. This study adds to what is known about modern art by showing how the connection between form and meaning is changing over time. Finally, this study suggests that future research should concentrate on experimental art practices, digital tools, and methods that combine different fields of study in Turkey.
