Belonging, otherness and identity in the context of migration in contemporary art

This study examines how the phenomenon of migration is represented in the context of contemporary art and analyzes how artists approach concepts such as migration, belonging and otherness. The study emphasizes that art is not only an aesthetic tool, but also has the potential to transform social and cultural contexts. In particular, it aims to present a new intellectual framework through the reflections of the phenomenon of migration in art by highlighting artistic approaches to the problem of identity. Focusing particularly on the period after 1960, the study aims to make the individual and social effects of migration visible through art. The selected works of art within the scope of the research were examined using the visual analysis method; the images, themes and expressions of the artists used were evaluated in terms of content. In addition, artist interviews and conversations were examined to provide a contextual depth regarding the creation processes of the works. In the study, which adopted an interdisciplinary approach, fields such as art history, sociology, cultural studies and visual communication were utilized. Themes such as immigrants' search for identity, lack of belonging, othering, marginalization and cultural conflict were analyzed through works of art. As a result of the research, it was emphasized that contemporary art is a powerful tool that addresses the phenomenon of migration in the context of social and cultural transformation. It was concluded that works of art function not only as a means of individual expression, but also as an area that builds social memory and encourages critical thinking. Thus, contemporary art is positioned as a form of expression that has the potential to shape the future by deepening social dialogue.
