Abstract (EN)

The use of color in art has always been an important aspect of cultural expression. In Western and Turkish art, colors are considered an important component of artistic expression and meaning. Colors are powerful tools used to convey the emotion, symbolism and aesthetic value of a work. Especially purple color occupies a special place among these colors. In Western art, purple is often associated with royalty, nobility, and religious symbols, while in medieval Europe, purple was a color used by the church and was widely used in religious ceremonies and in cathedral stained glass. In Turkish art, the color purple played a particularly striking role during the decline of the Ottoman Empire and the modernization process of Turkey. The frequent use of purple in palaces, jewelery and works of art can be regarded as an indicator that reflects the social and cultural changes of the period. The use of different colors in Turkish art history has added a new dimension to artistic expression. In this thesis, the use of the color purple in Turkish art, its meaning, context, and its relationship with the indicators within the scope of the cultural and artistic practices of the period were investigated. In this context, by examining various works of art and literary sources, it aimed to shed light on the role of the color purple in Turkish art and its relation to the wider cultural and social contexts in the Ottoman Empire. The importance of colors in art and culture continues to be an interesting area for art historians and cultural researchers, so it is thought that this thesis will make an important contribution to Turkish cultural history and art.
