Examining socio-economic relations between jazz musicians and live music sphere through value theories

In this study, the class struggle is examined, which is shaped in the market conditions and reduced to main classes which are musicians as simple commodity producers and business managers as owners of the means of production in view of the terms like value, commodity, and rent. The politic economy, starting with Adam Smith and taking its final shape with Karl Marx, is a study field which does not separate economy from politics and interprets social development with considering class struggle. In addition to the terms, value in use, value in exchange, value and commodity fetishism, the study also understands the situation of musicians via the concepts of productive labour and non-productive labour. Beside the literature shaped in Marxist view, this study will determine the strategy and the situations of musicians in the market with support of the literature shaped by Arjun Appadurai and David Graeber. This reflects the cultural side of the value. The reflection of individual interests is explained with the frame of this literature. In this point, the term, regimes of values and anthropological views of value has an impact. In other respect, with the term, rent, the unique side of the music is observed in the market and the transformations experienced by this uniqueness during the exchange are analyzed. How branding derived from the rent effects constructing of class relations in the market is scrutinized. On the other hand, to understand the contemporary World and examine the actors of the study in the current World Dynamics, the study benefits Ursula Huws' re interpretation of the terms, class and labour. In conclusion, this study shows us the relationship between owners of the production which are business managers, and the working class consisted of musicians as users of the production. This class struggle is examined by music with its commodity appaerance, and its commodity appaerance is also determined.
