The effect of 5E learning model on the academic achievement of 6th grade students in teaching of algebraic expressions

In this study, it was aimed to investigate the effect of the 5E learning model based on constructivist approach onthe academic achievement of 6th grade students in teaching ''Algebraic Expressions''.The research was conducted with 40 students from two differentsectionstudying in the 6th grade of a middle school located in a province of a city in the western black sea region in the spring semester of 2016-2017 academicyear.There were 20 students in each of the randomly assigned experimental and control groups. In the study, mixed method research design was used. The lessons in the experimental group were carried outwith the materials developed in accordance with the 5E learning model while the lessons in the control group was carried out according to the methods and models proposed by the textbooks developed based on the mathematics teaching program. Before the research, pre-test was based on grade average of 5th grade mathematics for the students in both groups.After the study, algebraic expressions achievement test was applied to both experimental and control groups. In addition, at the end of the application, semi-structured interviews were conducted with five students with different levels of success selected from the experimental group. Independent samples t-test and Mann Whitney U-test were used to analyze the quantitative data obtained from the study and the findings were interpreted at a significance level of 0,05. As a result of statistical studies, it was revealed that the lesson activities prepared according to the 5E learning model on ''Algebraic Expressions'' made statistically significant difference to the academic achievements of the students. By analyzing the content of semi-structured interviews, it was found that lessons that were supported by 5E learning model activities were more fun, improved interest and motivation, werebetter learned and lasted longer.
