Abstract (EN)

Introduction Head and neck cancers basically consist of larynx, oral cavity, pharynx (oropharynx, hypopharynx, nasopharynx) and paranasal sinus cancers. Although head and neck cancers form almost %3 of all cancers and are 6th most frequent types among all cancers, they are an important causeofcancer-related deaths. The aim of this study is analyze of the patients demographic data, region distribution, TNM stage and treatment information which received head and neck cancer diagnosis at the department of ENT between January 2004-December 2012 Materials-Methodology In the study, the names of head and neck cancer patients followed by the Celal Bayar University Department of Pathologywere screened and patients which received head and neck cancer diagnosis at the department of ENT between January 2004-December 2012 were selected for the study. Skin cancers of head, neck and face were not included to the study. The obtained data were analyzed with SPSS 15.0 software. Results Mean age of 636 patients was 58.3+13.9 (9-105). 515 of the patients were male(81%) and 121 of them were female(19%). The most commonly involved region among all cases was larynx with 317(51.3%), and then oropharynx, lips, nasopharynx and hipopharynx, consecutively. In45.2% of cases, the treatment data was incomplete. Discussion For head and neck cancers, it is known that there are differences at frequency, age, gender and profession among regions of Turkey. In our country, this subject is not sufficiently studied. To get a better understanding of the disease features in our country, we need to detect regional characteristics by making records of work and data analysis, determining risk factors, studies which help us to have better ideas about its distribution and characteristics. This type of studies will allow us to notice changes occurring in the epidemiological characteristics of cancers. For that aimit is important to regularly enrolled patients data.
