The effect of Cemâleddin Efgânî's on intellectual and social movement in Turkey

Cemâleddin Efgânî who travelled many places from Turkey, Egypt, England to Indian, Russia and Iran is a personality who made marks on the XIX. century's politics and world of ideas with the people he effected and the works behind him, the events he participated and the pupils he educated. The ongoing discussions on Efgânî whose traces and influences we can follow even today continue about his descendants, sect, the place he was born and his thoughts. Both his marks ( works, thoughts, pupils) and what his followers has made continue to be called as "Islamism", influences a number of people and the corpus on this topic grows day by day. While the corpus grows, and so the discussions around him. But in fact this is an element raising the significance of him. In this study there is little information on the discussions about his descendants, sect, the place he was born etc. Rather the discussions about his thoughts, struggles and his life is considered with the claims and views of some writers. Then his impressive character is evaluated with the foundational concepts of sociology, namely charisma. Also we give place to some important people he effected and try to determine the effects he made on the journasl of Sırât-ı Mustakîm/Sebîlürreşâd ve Türk Yurdu which were important social and intellectual circles. While scanning the journals of Sırât-ı Mustakîm/Sebîlürreşâd ve Türk Yurdu we fixed some influences of Efgânî and the line he represented. With this purpose as the direct influence, we made some researchs on the translation of Efgânî's works, texts on him and some of his concepts and thoughts. Next with the context of his indirect influence we determined the translations of Abduh and other pupils, and topics and the remarks around them. Therefore the influences and the dimensions of influences of Cemâleddin Efgânî on the Islamist and Turkish nationalist thought is examined with the important agents of these movements and their writings.
