Abstract (EN)

Izmir has acquired a cosmopolitan identity in the 19th century as a result of Levantine communities, Armenian, Greek and Jewish minorities, non-muslim Ottoman people and immigrants from Crimea and the Balkans living together. Architectural works that are representative of various cultures came into existence thanks to the cosmopolitan nature of the city. Projectings, which are in the focus of this study, are the most prominent architectural elements of the buildings that were influenced by the cosmopolitan nature of the city. This study aims to analyze the widely studied Izmir houses from a projecting focused standpoint. Another aim of this study is to document the peerless historical Izmir houses which are slowly fading away, and the projectings which are the most prominent elements of Izmir houses. 82 houses which are dated to 19th and early 20th century are analyzed in this study. A comprehensive catalogue is created with the drawings and detailed photographs of the aforementioned buildings and their projectings. Projectings are analyzed in detail with regards to their position, material, form and ornamentation in the review chapter. The study ends with the presentation of the acquired data in the conclusion chapter.
