Development of campus of Cerrahpaşa Medicine Faculty and its historical structures

In this study, the development of Campus of Cerrahpaşa Medicine Faculty, located in Istanbul, was examined from an architectural perpective. This study consist of four parts. In the first part of thesis consists purpose, scope and method of the study. In second part is for Byzantine and Ottoman periods of the area before the faculty of medicine. In the third chapter, existing or missing historical buildings within the boundaries of the campus are handled in the direction of visual and written documents and field researches. From 1893, it expanded into the surrounding neighborhoods of the borders of the campus. Some of the mosques and fountains remain within the boundaries while the housing texture of the neighborhoods disappear. These monumental structures within the boundaries have been determined one by one and tried to be examined in relation to the environment. In the fourth chapter, campus structures have been examined. As a result of the cholera outbreak in 1893, the conversion of the Takiyüddin Paşa Mansion in the area to a temporary hospital constitutes a beginning for the campus. At the beginning of the 20th century, temporary hospitals were transformed into permanent hospitals, and temporary hospitals established in Takiyüddin Paşa Mansion started serving as municipal hospitals. Over time, as more and more areas arise due to an increase in the number of patients, the boundaries of the campus with the added new structures expand west and south to reach their present boundaries. The constructions that were built in this process were started from the Takiyüddin Paşa Mansion and taken up in terms of individual architecture. The original drawings belonging to the settlement and the structure were reached; old and new photographs, drawings, maps were compared with the current situation. In the conclusion section of the thesis, it was tried to emphasize the importance of the hospital history and architectural history of the campus by determining the structures that were destroyed and added during the development process of the campus.
