Evalution of antioxidant activity of various herbal folk medicine

Abstract (EN)

This study was prepared to determine natural antioxidant capacity of some plants, which grown in Düzce and surroundings and used as anti-inflammatory. For this purpose, we investigated Plantago major ssp. major , P. lanceolata, Rubus hirtus, Hedera helix, Morus alba and Sambucus ebulus plants and the soil upper parts and leafs of these plants were extracted separately. In order to determine the antioxidant compounds and antioxidant capacity of these plants, different in vitro methods such as 2,2´-azino-bis (3-ethylbenzthiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) (ABTS) radical scavenging activity, 1,1-diphenyl-2-picryl-hydrazyl (DPPH·) free radical scavenging activity, N,N-dimethyl-p-phenylenediamine (DMPD) radical scavenging activity, superoxide anion radical (O2 ·-) scavenging activity, folin method, cupric ion (Cu2+) reduction capacity by cuprac method, total antioxidant capacity with thiocyanate method and total antioxidant response with the aid the kit were applied. Also ?-tocopherol, vitamin C, gallic acid, and trolox were used as the reference antioxidant compounds. As a result of our study, while Plantago lanceolata, Rubus hirtus, Sambucus ebulus and Plantago major ssp. major had similar to the content of phenolic compounds, Morus alba and Hedera helix were found to have relativly low content of phenolic compounds. In general, Plantago species and Rubus hirtus showed high antioxidant activity.
