Abstract (EN)
The superfamily of glutathione S-transferases (GSTs) consists of multiple isozymes with substantial evidence of functional polymorphic variation. Over the past three decades, data from cancer studies have linked aberrant expression of GST isozymes with the development and expression of resistance to a variety of chemicals, including cancer drugs. This study attempted to address how differences in human GST isozyme expression patterns affect cancer susceptibility, prognosis and treatment. This study attempted to address how differences in human GST isozyme expression patterns affect cancer susceptibility, prognosis and treatment. In this study, we used a PCR-based genotyping model to examine a polymorphism from each of the three GST genes, GSTM1, GSTP1 and GSTT1 in breast cancer susceptibility. The null genotype of GSTM1 was seen in approximately half (56% and 57%) of individuals in both the control and case populations. Our current results showed that GSTM1, GSTT1 and GSTP1 genotypes alone are not involved in breast cancer development, but this does not exclude interactions between genes and possible genotype combinations. However, genotypic analysis was not able to identify the combinations of genes tested in this study and predisposing genotypic combination correlations with breast cancer. Overall, our results do not support an independent or interacting role for these three glutathione S-transferase genes in sporadic breast cancer susceptibility in the study population.
