11 ABSTRACT Due to the growing environmental problems of the globe and the impact of an ecologically unconscious behaviour on environment and on the relationship between man and his environment, the time has come for a completely new way of looking at our practices. The problem of alienation with nature seems to take control of our own being. The emergence of new concepts such as sustainability, energy efficiency, or ecological design is the result of such a serious problem. The practice of urban design, accordingly, deals with a wide range of issues of ecological concern. This thesis takes such a framework as its context, also titled as "Ecologically Conscious Design". Within this framework, the nature of the concern is the relationship between man and the environment, which is perceived as carrying the potential answer to all ecological questions. The thesis focuses on the concept of livability and the holistic nature of the problem for achieving effective results. The study consists of six chapters. Following the introduction, in the second chapter, the conceptual framework, and the scope of the man/environment relations within a retrospective analysis are being discussed. The third chapter concentrates on the theory of ecologically conscious design, circumscribed within a holistic perspective. The perspective requires setting the goals and objectives of such a theoretical framework. The concept of livability is, inevitably, emphasized throughout. The forth chapter deals with the methodologies, strategies, and tactics to be adopted at all scales, from the global, down to the local scale. The basic criteria for ecologically conscious design are also included in this chapter. The fifth chapter, aims at applying the afore-mentioned criteria in a small scale design to be implemented in Alaçatı. The implementation process involves a comparative framework. The sixth chapter makes concluding remarks concerning the essence of the subject.
