Abstract (EN)

During the Republican era, it was observed that the general opinion of leading statesmen, especially Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, focused on the issue of women's education. Therefore, women were initially granted equal rights with men in education, and an increase in the literacy rate of women was observed in primary, secondary, high school, and university. On November 1, 1928, the Alphabet Reform was adopted, rendering the Ottoman alphabet obsolete and introducing the Turkish alphabet based on Latin letters. With the implementation of the alphabet reform, the idea of teaching the new letters to the public arose, and to teach the new alphabet and increase literacy rates, People's Schools were established on January 1, 1929. When the People's Schools proved insufficient, Community Centers were opened, followed by Village Institutes. The Republican People's Party (CHP), the ruling party of the time, placed great emphasis on the education of women. Between 1924 and 1942, the CHP attempted to fill the gap in student dormitories. To this end, they had student dormitories built alongside the schools where students received their education. These student dormitories were grouped into five categories: those opened by the CHP, those opened by the Ministry of Health and Social Affairs, those affiliated with the Turkish Education Society, those sponsored by the provinces, and those privately owned and opened for commercial purposes. Students stayed in these dormitories for the duration of their education, paying a fee determined by the dormitories.
