Factors affecting the decisions of farmers to make agricultural insurance: Sample of Adana province

Although Adana is one of the most important provinces where farming is intensive, farmers education is high and products are grown sensitive to natural risks such as corn, cotton, wheat, watermelon, lemon and orange producers do not show interest in agriculture insurance at the desired level. This study was carried out in order to determine the factors affecting farmers decisions on making agricultural insurance in Adana province. In the study, the data obtained by questionnaire applied with 115 producers in 58 villages of Adana province in 2015. T-test, anova and chi-square statistics were used to compare the socio-economic characteristics of insured and non-insured farmers and logistic regression analysis was used to determine factors affecting on farmers' decisions on maling agricultural insurance. According to there sults of there search; 52,20% had at least one agriculture insurance in the past years, farmers' average age was 48,50 years, average experience was 27,30 years, family size was 6,37, education levels were high (24,35% of farmers had graduates degree), 44,35% of the farmers inhabited in the villages, 13,92% of them inhabited in the cities, 59,10% of them had a house out side the village, 76,50% of them main profession was farming, avarage farm land size was 406,34 decares and plot number was 8,05. It was determined that age, experience, family size, farm land size and farm land ownership, plot number, main proffesion, credit use, production pattern and joining to village management affecting on farmers' decision on making agricultural insurance.
