Abstract (EN)

The mask has taken place in many belief systems in different ways and has become a symbol of creation by being associated with existence. Carl Gustav Jung interpreted the mask to psychology with the concept of "persona". Persona is the role, mask or personality pattern that people play in order to adapt and be accepted by the society. The aim of this study is to investigate the usage purposes and usage patterns of the mask in the character design processes, which have an important place in cartoons. For this purpose, mask usage patterns and purposes in cartoon characters were examined in detail through examples and interpreted through Jung's concept of persona. In the study, the movie "Princess Mononoke" was analyzed in detail with the content analysis method in order to examine the usage patterns and purposes of the mask in the characters. Then, a cartoon application was carried out using the 3D animation technique. As a result of the study, it is thought that especially the metaphorical use of the mask contributes to the design of the physical, psychological and sociological dimensions of the character design processes. It has been concluded that the mask provides variety in character design processes in animation cinema and is used as a creative element. Keywords: Mask, Persona, Character design, Cartoon
