The effects of the self sufficiency and anxiety levels of mothers, whom their children are receiving nebulized inhalation treatment, on the application of nebulized inhalation practices

The Effects of the Self Sufficiency and Anxiety Levels of Mothers, Whom Their Children are Receiving Nebulized Inhalation Treatment, on the Application of Nebulized Inhalation Practices Purpose: The purpose of this study is to determine the effects of self sufficiency and anxiety levels of the mothers whom children are receiving nebulized inhalation treatment on the application of nebulized inhalation practices. Material and Method: This study was conducted at the city center of Erzurum, at the Erzurum Regional Training and Research Hospital, Pediatrics Ward, which is a member of Erzurum Public Hospitals Union, between January 2015 and March 2017. The universe of this study consists of mothers of 376 pediatric patients aging from 0 to 4 years old, who were admitted to the Erzurum Regional Training and Research Hospital, Pediatrics Ward and received nebulized inhalation treatment. The sample of this study consists 300 mothers who agreed to participate in this study and have their child admitted to the Pediatrics Ward between December 2015 and May 2016. The data was gathered using Data Gathering Form, Nebulized Inhalation Application Checklist, Situational Anxiety Scale and Self Effectiveness-Sufficiency Scale. The mean value, number, percentage distrubition, Kruskal-Wallis one-way analysis of variance, Mann-Whitney U test, t test, Anova and correlation analysis methods were used for the interpretation of the data gathered. Results: The mean of mothers total Self-Efficiancy-Sufficiency score was found 79.60 ± 15.23 and total Situational Anxiety score was 37.07 ± 4.95. Considering the minimum and maximum borders of the scales, the self efficiancy sufficiency level of mothers was found moderate, and the situational anxiety level was found low. No correlation was found between Self-Efficiency-Sufficiency and Situational Anxiety levels of mothers (p>0.05). Conclusion: This study suggests that self sufficiency and anxiety levels of mothers effect several aspects of nebulized inhalation applications to some extent such as; succesfully connecting the one end of tube to the nebulizer and the other end to the bottom of the inhalation mask, dispensing the right amount of medicine to the reservoir when the child starts breathing, encouraging the child to calmly breathe until the dispensed medicine is used, discarding the mask to the appropriate waste bin after the application.
