Abstract (EN)

ABSTRACT The aim of this study is to evaluate the validity and reliability of Child Behavior Checklist and to put forth some of the undesired behaviors of children who are 5-6 years of age living in Kastamonu. The data was obtained from 20 teachers of 243 students in 2005-2006, working in pre-school institutions in Kastamonu provincial center, and Daday, Devrekani, Seydiler and Taşköprü districts. The items of the questionnaire were designated by applying to specialists in the field and following the application the validity and reliability of the items were checked to form the scale. Then the undesired behaviors of children were analyzed concerning the variables such as age, sex, family type, occupation of the parents, the number of the siblings etc. Following the explanatory and confirmatory factor analyses, a Child Behavior Checklist with three factors and 73 items with subtitles such as disobedient behaviors, responsive behaviors, and social anxiety was formed to determine the internal consistency. The Cronbach?s Alpha was .95 and Spearman Brown?s split half reliability coefficient was .82 . The item analysis indicated that all correlations were significant at the .001 level. In the comparison of scale scores of the groups, independent t-test was used to compare two groups and one-way ANOVA was used to compare three or more groups. Scheffe test was used to determine the differences where the variant analysis was significant. The findings of the study are as follows: 1. Boys are more mutinous and incongruous than girls (p<.05). v 2. Children in 5 year age group are more anxious than the children in 6 year age group whereas children in big families are more anxious than the children of nuclear family (p<.05). 3. Children of working mothers are more incongruous and anxious. Children whose fathers are laborers have more incongruous behaviors than the children whose father are teachers or doctors. 4. Children whose mothers are primary school graduates have more undesired behaviors than the children whose mother are high school or university graduates. 5. Children whose fathers are primary school graduates have more incongruous behaviors than the children whose father are high school or university graduates. 6. There is a significant difference between the responsive behaviors, social anxiety and total scale scores of children regarding the number of siblings.
