Analysis of children's magazines in terms of vocabulary: TRT Çocuk, Bilim Çocuk, Bilge Çocuk, Diyanet Çocuk, Minikago example

This study aims to create an index by determining the vocabulary elements present in children's magazines and the frequency of their usage. The January, March, September, and June issues of TRT Çocuk, Bilim Çocuk, Bilge Çocuk, Diyanet Çocuk, and MinikaGO magazines published in 2021 were included in our study. Using document analysis methodology, the vocabulary elements present in the selected magazines were identified, and their frequency of occurrence in these magazines was determined. The data were analyzed using descriptive analysis method. Türksözdiz program was used for data analysis. This program analyzes words in texts to determine their frequencies and distributions. Through the Türksözdiz program, the frequencies of words in the magazines were automatically calculated, and vocabulary elements were systematically identified and listed. It was determined that a total of "97.525" vocabulary elements were used in the children's magazines examined. The distribution of these elements according to the magazines is as follows in order of frequency: "25.586" in Bilim Çocuk magazine, "21.146" in TRT Çocuk magazine, "19.826" in MinikaGO magazine, "19.161" in Bilge Çocuk magazine, and "11.576" in Diyanet Çocuk magazine. According to the findings of the research, the highest number of proverbs, 7 in frequency, is found in Bilge Çocuk magazine. Proverbs were not encountered in the issues of TRT Çocuk magazine examined. The most frequently used idiom, 254 times, is in MinikaGO magazine, while the least used idiom, 102 times, is in Bilim Çocuk magazine. The most frequent collocation, with 76 occurrences, is in MinikaGO magazine, while the least frequent collocation, with 42 occurrences, is in Bilim Çocuk magazine. The most frequent proper noun, with 1208 occurrences, is in Bilim Çocuk magazine, while the least frequent proper noun, with 461 occurrences, is in Diyanet Çocuk magazine. After basic words, the most frequently used vocabulary element is proper nouns in the examined magazines. The other vocabulary elements are idioms, collocations, and proverbs in order of frequency.
