A review on the interiors of children's houses

In the world, policies have been developed and organizations have been established in order to take care of children whose families cannot meet their financial and moral needs and cannot be able to take care of and unable to protect for certain reasons. Generally, these establishments are barracks-type institutions which are constituted under the name of orphanage. Turkey has provided care services in barrack-type boarding institutions for a long time for children who are in need of protection. In the literature review it was seen that criticisms were made about the barrack-type institutions at the beginning of the 2000s and different solutions were started to produce. In line with these solutions, children (love) homes have been established as an alternative to barrack-type institutions. Children's homes are a care model developed for children in need of protection to grow up in a better environment. Children's homes are thought to be much more adequate for the development of the children than dormitory and kindergarten environments. First of all, the subject is that it is possible for the child to get the maximum share of the care given in these houses, to enter into individual relationships more easily and to become a member of the house by creating a sense of belonging rather than being a group member. According to this case, considering the effect of space on child development that living in groups in barracks-type dormitories will dull the sense of belonging to the child, it is aimed that smaller and private spaces will positively effect on children's development within the children's house model. At this point, for the comfort, safety and health development of children; spatial design, spatial features, reinforcement elements, material usage and spatial arrangements of social living spaces should be taken into consideration. Within this context, there is need for researches over children's home spaces in order to see whether or not the places where children, who receive service in the children's home care model, live are at a sufficient level. The main problem of this research is to examine the spatial characteristics of children's houses in terms of interior architecture, to what extent they meet the spatial expectations for children in need of protection, and what needs to be done to increase the spatial competence of children's houses.
