Evaluation of family-centered care instruction given to pediatric nurses

This study was performed to evaluate the Family Centered Care (FCC) training given to nurses working in pediatric clinics with the family centered care attitude scale. The research is of an experimental type. This research was conducted with 70 nurses Turgut Özal Medical Center of İnönü University in Malatya in Turkey, on 1 July-30 December 2019. The data were collected as pre-training / pre-test, post-training / post-test using the introduction form, Family Centered Care Attitude Scale (FCCAS). Statistical analyzes were performed using a program called SPSS (IBM SPSS Statistics 24). The mean age of the nurses was 32.06 ± 6.21 (year), 81.4% of the nurses were female, 55.7% of them were married, and 25.7% of the nurses had two children. It was found that 51 nurses (72.9%) heard the concept of Family Centered Care (FCC), and that (56.9%) of them heard the concept of FCC in the hospital. It was determined that 47 nurses (92.2%) thought that FCC was beneficial and 27 nurses (38.6%) sometimes applied FCC in their clinics. A significant difference was found in terms of FCC attitude scale pre-test scores according to the working time of the nurses (p <0.05). A significant difference was found in terms of FCCAS post-test scores according to the clinics where the nurses work (p <0.05). In the evaluation of the training given to pediatric nurses participating in the study; FCC attitude (given as pre-education; post-education, respectively, 4.04 ± 0.59; 4.55 ± 0.25), FCC contribution sub-dimension (4.05 ± 0.63; 4.55 ± 0.27), family and child care participati on (4.04 ± 0.59; 4.55 ± 0.26) sub-dimension was found to be statistically highly significant (p <0.001) and it was determined that the high scores before the training rose to a very high level. According to the family care coefficient sub-dimension of FCC education and the final result of the FCC attitude scale, there is a significant relationship between working year of the nurses and their awareness of the concept of FCC (p <0.05). According to the family and child participation in care sub-dimension of FCC care education and the FCCAS, the difference after the training was significant in terms of the clinic where the nurses work (in the pediatric psychiatry clinic) (p <0.05). In terms of the contribution of FCC education and FCC, the difference with the frequency of FCC practise after the instruction is significant (p <0.05). A statistically significant difference was found in terms of pre-education scores of the contribution of family-centered care sub-dimension according to the educational levels of the nurses (p <0.05). FCCAS Cronbach-α coefficient of the nurses was found to be highly reliable (pre-education: 0.985; post-education: 0.998). As a result, the hypothesis " FCC training given to Pediatric Health and Disease Nurses affects the attitude of Nurses" was accepted. FCC training, which is the philosophy of care of pediatric nursing, should be given by educators specialized in their field, both in under graduate education and in-service education.
