Evaluation of the perspectives of families to their children in the context of sociology of children (a sample of Elazığ province)

Childhood years have great importance, because of these are the years which the individual determines the direction of his life in youth, adulthood and old age periods, which he learns to adapt to social life and which he gains the knowledge and skills will be necessary in his later life. It is quite necessary to investigate the children?s status in social life, socialization and relations with family and other social environment who are seen as the future of society.This study, that aimed to evaluate the perspectives of parents to their children, to childhood, to parent ? child relations and to child?s socialization in the context of sociology of children, was conducted referring to the views of 418 parents whose children are studying in 5 th classes located in 12 primary schools in Elazığ province center in 2009 ? 2010 academic year. In this study the survey technique was used and questions about parent ? child relationships, child rearing and child?s socialization; relationships between siblings; relationships between friends; child?s education life and career choice; child?s leisure time activities, interests, habits, requests, play, mass media, consumption, working life, sports, health, crime and child rights were asked to parents.In the study, many conclusions were reached such as, parents noted that the first 5 problems experienced by them with their children are about communication between the siblings, feeding, school, child?s wishes and obeying the family rules; parents noted that the most important 5 child rearing values for them are the child?s being educated, being connected to the religious values, being honest, being moral and being connected to his family; primary school graduated parents had adopted the authoritarian child rearing attitudes with the highest rate, middle school and high school graduated parents had adopted the protective child rearing attitudes with the highest rate; university and master / PhD graduated parents had adopted the democratic child rearing attitudes with the highest rate.Key Words: Child, Childhood, Sociology of Children, Sociology of Childhood, Child?s Socialization, Parent ?
