Spatial perception and preferences in children: Primary school classrooms example

Classrooms in the primary school level of education are places where children spend a long time and are involved in their perceptions. For this reason, the physical characteristics of classrooms should contribute to children's perceptual-cognitive development and improve their spatial perceptions and learning performance. This study aims to determine the physical elements (form, texture, colour, light and scale) in the classrooms and the children's preferences and desires regarding the classrooms in the primary school level educational settings. In the first section, the concept of perception, the development of the child, the spatial perception of the child and the classrooms in the educational settings have been mentioned. In the second section, information on the purpose of the study, the phases of the study, and the activities of "on-site monitoring", "planned interview", "visual survey" and "drawing" activities have been expressed. In the third section, findings of the on-site detection of the elementary school examined in the scope of the study, face-to-face interviews with students, visual survey findings and findings of children's own class pictures have been included. In the fourth section, different data groups have been evaluated, and in the fifth chapter, the obtained results of the study have been examined in terms of the physical factors and the students' assessments related to these physical factors, and their preferences and desires regarding the situations of the classrooms. In the sixth and final section, under the light of the obtained results, recommendations have been presented for the classroom designs to be created in primary school projects in the future.
