Examination of the documentary "The Bond From Geography to Culture" in terms of social studies course curriculum

The aim of this study is to determine the usability of the documentary titled "Geography to Culture" broadcasted on TRT Documentary channel within the scope of learning areas, achievements, skills and values in the Social Studies Curriculum at the 5th, 6th and 7th grade levels and to determine the usability of the documentary in social studies teaching. This study was structured with qualitative research method. Document analysis was used as the data collection method in the study. The data analyzed according to the descriptive analysis method were summarized and interpreted according to the predetermined themes. The data of the study consisted of the first 35 episodes of the documentary titled "Geography to Culture" broadcast on TRT Documentary channel. When the findings of the study are analyzed; the learning areas that the documentary is most related to are People, Places and Environments, Culture and Heritage, Production, Distribution and Consumption, and Global Connections. It is seen that the skills associated with the documentary episodes are not evenly distributed and a total of 14 of the 27 skills in the curriculum are included. It was determined that 12 of the 18 values in the social studies curriculum were included in the documentary. In line with the findings obtained, suggestions were made for the use of the examined parts of the documentary "Geography to Culture" in relation to the learning areas, achievements, values and skills in the social studies curriculum and determined within the scope of this research, the development of activities based on the documentary in question, and the increase of academic studies on the use of documentaries in the social studies course.
