Evaluations of residents living in the neighborhood of archaeological sites on the archaeological heritage in multilayered cities: case of İzmir

Our country has so much archaeological potential around the world. Mankind has lived and accumulated different cultures in these lands for years. In the history of the cities in these lands, there are the ruins of the Antique Period and the ruins of the earlier periods. In some of our cities, archaeological sites are integrated with the city. This situation, which appeared in multi-layered urban settlements, led to the formation of different concepts in urban and archaeological terms. Urbanization and contemporary developments that we face today are sharp transforming the urban fabric that has been formed in thousands of years in the world. The concept of an urban archeology emerged and developed with the concept of conservation and its methods being insufficient in the face of the problems of multi-layered cities. This concept is based on the idea that in the development of multi-tier cities, their past needs to be understood in order to meet their future needs. Its aim is not to enlighten the history of the city and to establish the urban structure, but to contribute to the social and cultural development of the city. In multilayered cities it is possible to come across traces of different cultures and civilizations. What is important here is to whom and in which ways the historical values are reached and shared with them. This has led to the emergence of approaches to archaeological sites in multi-layered cities. The concepts of social archeology are important in terms of reaching the society by reflecting the archaeological values to the social life. In the light of these concepts, in the thesis study, the interests, knowledge and opinions of the people living around the two archaeological sites in the city center of Izmir were investigated. As a result of this, it was aimed to reach to the knowledge of how the city and the archaeological sites integrated with the city are effective in terms of the formation of conservation understanding and awareness about the historical values and cultural heritage of the society and what should be done at the missing points. It has been emphasized that the archaeological works carried out in the city should be carried out integrated with the society and that the perception of protection will be strengthened by the awareness of the society against historical values.
