The comparison of increased gastric wall thickness found incidentally by the multislice computed tomography with gastroscopy findings

Gastric cancer is still an important cause of cancer-related deaths, despite the increased rates of resectability and a decrease in its incidence. However early diagnosis and treatment of patients with gastric cancers and detection of premalignant lesions are important in this aspect.In the study, we aimed to compare the wall thickening known as a stimulant parameter for stmoch diseases and its degree incidentally found by Multislice Computed Tomography (MSCT) with gastroscopy findings and to determine early period detection of possible premalignant-lesions.149 cases who consisted of 89 men and 60 women with incidentally detected stomach wall thickening and endoscopic examination performed included in the study. The degree of gastric wall thickness detected by MSCT, endoscopic examination findings and the results of pathological examinations when necessary were evaluated.The all cases with more than 5 mm gastric wall thickness were divided into 3 groups and 5 groups according to the wall thickness degree and localization, respectively. Results of endoscopic and pathological examinations of these cases were assessed as benign, premalignant and malignant.There was a statistically significant relationship between gastric wall thickness and the malignancy (p<0.05).There was statistically significance found between the increases in diffuse gastric wall thickness and the gastric antrum, wall thickening degree and pathological diagnoses (p<0.05). Statistically significance was not found in the wall thicknening of other stomach parts (p>0.05).Our findings showed that the importance of the evaluation of endoscopic examination and evaluation with biopsy when necessary for increased gastric wall thickness found incidentally by MSCT. These observations will be an important step for early diagnosis and treatment of gastric cancers with still very poor prognosis.Keywords: Gastric cancer, gastric wall thickness, multislice computed tomography, gastroscopy.
