ABSTRACT COMPUTER AIDED DESIGN AND OPTIMIZATION OF GEAR REDUCTION UNIT ÇETİNKAYA, Şükrü M.S. in Mechanical Eng. Supervisor: Asst. Prof. Dr. Cengiz DO?AN April 1998, 87 pages In this thesis, a study on the design and optimisation of single and double stage gear reduction unit is presented. Theories on the design of gear pairs (spur, helical) are mentioned. For the optimization process, linear searching method was used by taking the volume occupied by the pinion as objective function. The iteration technique is used in determining gear parameters. A computer program was prepared to automate the procedure in FORTRAN 90 to accomplish the iteration processes, based on linear searching method and the assumptions made. The program is tested with practical examples. Quite reasonable results (gear parameters) are obtained for the working condition of some of the commercially available gear reduction units of vehicles and engineering equipments.
