Evaluation of the effect of anxiety and para-functional habits on the temporomandibular joint in patients with A past COVİD-19

Abstract (EN)

Aim: In this study; By using the DC/TMD scale, which is valid to determine temporomandibular joint disorders (TMD), it is aimed to examine the effects of the systemic status of the patients (ASA 1 - ASA 2), the effect of CV-19 on anxiety and parafunctional habits on TMD. Material and Method: Our study was carried out on 100 patients who applied to our clinic with TMD. Patients participating in the study; Patients who had CV-19 (study group) and patients who did not (control group) were divided into two groups, then these two groups were divided into two subgroups as ASA 1 and ASA 2 patients according to their systemic diseases (ASA classification). Differences between groups; in the DC/TMD scale valid in the literature; It was evaluated using the TMD Pain Questionnaire (TMD Pain Screener), the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9), the General Anxiety Disorder-7 (GAD-7) and the Oral Habits Checklist (OBC: Oral Behaivors Checklist). Statistical analyzes in this study were made with the IBM SPSS Statistics 26 package program. Results: Considering the mean and standard deviation of the TMD Pain Questionnaire scores, it is seen that the ranking is N1, C1, C2 and N2. When the mean and standard deviation of the PHQ-9 scores are examined, it is seen that the ranking is C2, C1, N2 and N1. Considering the mean and standard deviation of the GAD-7 scores, the ranking is C2, N2, C1 and N1. When the mean and standard deviation of OBC scores are compared, the ranking is N1, C2, N2, and C1. In the light of these scores, it is seen that joint complaints in patients with CV-19 and ASA 2 increase mostly due to depression and anxiety. Conclusion: As a result of the One-Way Analysis of Variance (ANOVA), there was no statistically significant difference between the study groups in terms of TMD Pain Questionnaire, PHQ-9, GAD-7 and OBC scores. However, in the TMD Pain, PHQ-9, GAD-7, OBC questionnaires, the first and second highest values increase in direct proportion to the CV-19 exposure of the patients. In order to better understand the results, studies on larger patient populations are needed.
