Effect of COVID-19 Pandemic on Burnout in Anesthesiology and Reanimation Specialists and Residents

Effect of COVID-19 Pandemic on Burnout in Anesthesiology and Reanimation Specialists and Residents Objective: In our study, we examined the burnout levels of Anesthesiology and Reanimation specialists and residents. In addition, we aimed to investigate the effect of COVID-19 pandemic on these burnout levels. Material and Method: Our study was conducted by surveying method by contacting Anesthesiology and Reanimation specialists and residents via internet. The questionnaire created consists of 28 open and closed-ended questions that collect the socio-demographic data of the participant and data related to the working conditions and it consists of 22 questions Maslach Burnout Inventory-Medical Personnel (MBI-HSS MP) form. Results: As a result of the study, it was concluded that % 43.7 of the participants experienced high level burnout. There was no significant difference between the genders in terms of burnout level. Burnout was found to be significantly higher in teenagers, singles, non parenthood and smokers (p<0.05). After pandemic, % 80 of physicians think that their stress levels have increased. The rate of those who changed the accommodation type after pandemic is % 18. No significant relationship was found between COVID-19 (+) patient contact and burnout. Conclusion: Nearly half of the physicians participating in the study have high levels of burnout. Burnout occurring in doctors negatively affects not only the individual but his family, colleagues and patients. It reveals the possibility of harm by increasing the physicians probability of making mistakes. Such an important problem needs to be investigated along with its causes.
