A case study on secondary mathematics teaching in the distance education process during the COVID 19 pandemic period

In this study, it was aimed to determine the perspectives of secondary school students towards distance education, their perspectives towards mathematics courses they took with distance education, their study patterns and the materials used by their teachers in distance education courses during the education process interrupted due to the COVID-19 pandemic. For this purpose, case study design, one of the qualitative research designs, was used in the study. The study group of the research consists of 27 secondary school students who are continuing their education in the 10th, 11th and 12th grades in Karasu district of Sakarya province in the 2019-2020 academic year, selected by purposeful sampling method. The data of the study were collected with a demographic information form and a form consisting of open-ended questions created by the researcher. Interviews with the participants were recorded with the Google Meet program and analyzed by the researcher. According to the data obtained as a result of the research, it was concluded that all of the secondary school students preferred face-to-face education. The reasons for not choosing distance education were the internet problem and the problem of not being able to focus. In distance education mathematics courses, students stated that they preferred face-to-face education and the reason for this was that they were in the same environment with the teacher, while the students also stated that their teachers used whiteboard applications and e-books as materials in the lessons.
