Abstract (EN)
This study investigates the correlation between Hikikomori—a phenomenon characterized by prolonged withdrawal from social contact for at least 6 months—and the mandatory isolation measures and increased social media usage during the Covid-19 pandemic. Employing a mixed-method approach, the research utilized quantitative methods such as surveys and qualitative methods including semi-structured interviews. Quantitative data from 1201 students underwent statistical analyses like normality testing, factor analysis, t-tests, correlation analysis, validity and reliability tests, and regression analysis. Qualitative insights were gathered through semi-structured interviews involving 12 experts: 4 psychologists, 4 social media specialists and 4 healthcare professionals. Findings indicate that variables such as gender, age, Covid-19 isolation status, contact-related isolation, and pandemic-induced job loss are linked to Hikikomori symptoms. Education level showed a negative correlation with these symptoms. Increased isolation and social media usage were both associated with heightened Hikikomori risk, with a notable positive correlation between social media dependence and symptom severity. These findings aid in understanding the social and psychological impacts of pandemics, facilitating the development of targeted interventions. The escalation of isolation and heightened social media engagement during the pandemic emerge as factors potentially exacerbating Hikikomori risks. Thus effective measures are crucial to safeguard individuals' psychological well-being during such times. Additionally strategies to manage social media usage responsibly and mitigate the effects of isolation are essential.
