ABSTRACT MSc THESIS RESEARCH on DETERMINING of DIFFERENT WINTER CROPS to be USED as GREEN MANURE for MAIZE under ÇUKUROVA CONDITIONS İLKER İNAL DEPARTMENT OF FIELD CROPS INSTITUTE OF NATURAL AND APPLIED SCIENCES UNIVERSITY OF ÇUKUROVA Supervisor: Prof. Dr. TURAN SA?LAMTİMUR Year: 1997 Pages: 43 Jury: Prof. Dr. TURAN SA?LAMTİMUR Prof. Dr. VEYİS TANSI Doç. Dr. A. EMİN ANLARSAL In order to use some winter crops as green manure before maize cropping in Çukurova, berseem clover (Trifolium alexandrimtm L), faba bean (Viciafaba L), vetch+oat mixture (Vicia sativa L.+Avena sativa), phacelia (Phacelia tanacetifolia Benth.) and rape (Brasica napus var. oleifera) were grown during winter period and, before maize seeding, all green material were smash then ploughed into soil, fresh and dryed yields obtained from green manure crops changed between 3216.67 kg/da and 5016.67 kg/da, and 591.67-1148.67 kg/da respectively. While the highest grain yield was obtained with 1085.72 kg/da from maize after berseem clover, the lowest grain yield was obtained with 833.17 kg/da from maize after phacelia. It was determined that secured maize seed yields of per unit nitrogen especially grown after legumes was significantly higher than control system. It can be conducted the green manuring before maize cropping can save nitrogen input to soil. Key Words: Green Manure, Maize, Berseem Clover, Faba Bean, Rape, Phacelia, Vetch+Oat Mixture, Grain Yield, Total N. m
