Özet (EN)
In this study, data pertaining to Classroom Discourse, accumulatedthrough audio-recordings in four different classes in English Language TeachingDepartment at Çukurova University was analysed through Discourse AnalysisMethods thus determining and defining the interactional patterns which make upinitiation moves. As generally accepted, Sinclair and Coulthard (1975) haveplayed a pioneering role in Discourse Analysis. They and other researchersengaged in Discourse Analysis have pointed out to the presence of aninteractional pattern IRF (Initiation-Response-Follow-up) in ClassroomDiscourse. In this study, the presence of this pattern with reference toClassroom Discourse was also examined. This is tried to be achieved byfocusing on initiation moves. Initiation moves taken both by teachers and pupilswere analysed in order to be able to determine the different functions theyintend to fulfill and the frequency they were used with. The data base containing1103 turns taken by the teachers and the pupils in the classes were transcribedand analysed. The analysis was conducted through the use of descriptivestatistics. The results of the analysis pertaining to initiation moves in Englishclasses, where research was conducted, point out to the presence of a patternwhich consists of an initiation move mostly by the teacher, a response movegiven by the pupil and follow-up move by the teacher. Thus the presence of anIRF pattern becomes apparent. It has been established that the percentage ofinitiation moves belonging to pupils, %9,65, were far less than that of theteachers. It may be seen that the frequency distibution of initiation movesbelonging to the teachers and pupils suggest to the presence of an assymetrybiased towards the teachers. It may also be concluded that the pupils?contributions in classes were quite limited compared to that of the teachers?.Since there is no research conducted in this area in Turkey, the results obtainedin this research were compared with the research done in other countries andhas been found out that they were supporting eachother.Key Words: IRF Pattern, Teacher `initiation moves?, Pupil `initiationmoves?Teacher control
