The relationship of vitamin D deficiency and hypeparathyroidism with markers of inflammation

Abstract (EN)
The main task of vitamin D is to provide calcium-phosphorus homeostasis together with parathormone (PTH). It also has functions such as inhibition of cellular proliferation, stimulation of terminal differentiation, inhibition of angiogenesis, stimulation of insulin production, stimulation of apoptosis, suppression of renin production, stimulation of macrophage cathelicidin production. PTH is a hormone secreted from the parathyroid gland and controls calcium and phosphorus concentrations by binding to the PTH receptor of the target organ. It stimulates the production of interleukin-6 (IL-6) in osteoblasts and liver cells. IL-6 regulates acute phase protein synthesis in the liver. Vitamin D and PTH are considered to be associated with microinflammation due to their roles in the immune system. Our study aimed to determine the relationship between vitamin D deficiency and PTH levels and hematological inflammatory markers. In our study, the laboratory data of a total of 864 female patients were analyzed retrospectively, and the relationship between vitamin D, PTH and inflammatory markers and various parameters was examined. When 20 ng/mL was taken as the threshold value, relationship was determined between vitamin D and inflammatory markers (CRP, NLR). This relationship weakened with the increase of the threshold value and could only be detected with NLR. This information may indicate that the relationship between vitamin D and inflammation becomes stronger as vitamin D decreases, and the 20 ng/mL threshold for replacement may be more significant in terms of inflammation. In our study, a weak and contradictory relationship was found between PTH level and inflammatory markers according to the evaluation method so large-scale studies and analysis are needed.
