Relationship between vitamin D and body mass index

Abstract (EN)

It is observed in research that vitamin D deficiency is a serious health problem seen all over the world. Principally vitamin D deficiency and obesity are recognized as an increasingly important public health problem worldwide. Studies have examined the correlation between vitamin D deficiency and obesity and found an adverse correlation. In this study, we also aimed to determine the correlation between demographic characteristics and vitamin D. It has been found that body mass index, physical activity level, gender, marital status, ways of going to work, vitamin D supplementation status, vitamin D-containing food consumption status and consumption amount, day-to-day use of daily exposure to seasonal affect vitamin level. This cross-sectional study, which was conducted at Medical Faculty of Erzincan Binali Yıldırım University Mengücek Gazi Training and Research Hospital Internal Medicine Department between October 2018 and March 2019, included a total of 18 years old and over 207 patients. Patients with any chronic disease previously diagnosed were excluded from the study. A questionnaire was performed to the patients in order to evaluate their physical activities and general characteristics while adhering to the basic ethical values and principles. Body mass index was calculated and pre-ordered serum vitamin D levels were measured. It was found that there was a positive significant relationship between vitamin D levels and physical activity level in participants of our study. A significant negative correlation was found between vitamin D levels and patients' weight and Body Mass Index (BMI). Vitamin D levels decrease with increasing weight and BMI, and vitamin D levels increase with increasing physical activity levels. The relationship between them was found to be statistically significant (p <0.05). It was found that physical activity levels and vitamin D levels of male patients had higher than female patients and the difference was statistically significant (p<0.05). It was determined that the physical activity levels of the housewives of the viii participants were low and also the vitamin D levels of the patients using public transportation while going to work were low and the difference between them was statistically significant. It was found that physical activity levels and vitamin D levels were higher in patients who consumed a lot, and the difference between them was statistically significant. Vitamin D and physical activity levels of patients exposed to daylight more than 60 minutes were determined. Furthermore; Between March 23rd and September 23rd between 10.00-15.00 hours of direct exposure to sunlight in patients with vitamin D and physical activity levels were higher than the average of patients who stated that they were not exposed and the difference between them was statistically significant. Serum vitamin D levels were higher in non-smoker male patients compared to male smokers and the difference was statistically significant. It was determined that vitamin D levels of married patients were higher than those of single patients and the difference between them was statistically significant. It was found that as the age of the participants increased, their BMI increased and the BMI of married individuals was higher than that of single individuals and the difference between them was found to be statistically significant. As a result; in our study, vitamin D insufficiency and deficiency was found to be quite high in the study group and there was a significant relationship between 25- hydroxy vitamin D3 (25(OH)D3) serum level and BMI and physical activity level.
