The effect of the Nature Karabakh problem on the geopolitics of the Caucasia: 1988-2020

South Caucasus is one of the important geographies with its cultural and natural riches. The South Caucasus, which Zibingnev Brezinski describes as the chessboard for world domination, is a strategically important part of Eurasia. Many historians have defined the Caucasus as a "geography of conflict" as well as its wealth. With the disintegration of the Soviet Union, the Caucasus has become a center of attraction again with the states that declared their independence, and the ethnic diversity that has existed throughout history has been replaced by ethnic conflicts with the conflicts of interest of global qewcultural riches and lifestyles, turned their friendship into enmity in the environment created by competition over time. The most important of these conflicts is the Nagorno-Karabakh problem, which is in the center of the South Caucasus. The Nagorno-Karabakh problem has been one of the most important problems in the last two centuries in the Caucasus and has a significant impact on the geopolitics of the South Caucasus. Nagorno-Karabakh, Caspian Basin and Central Asia have been the subject of many geopolitical plans as it is next to energy sources. In this study, the geopolitical importance of the region is discussed in the context of classical geopolitics. As a result of the developments that have taken place, in line with the interests of the regional actors towards the South Caucasus, the problem that has become an area of contention at the global level is also analyzed from a critical geopolitical perspective. The study also focuses on how the Second Nagorno-Karabakh War will shape the South Caucasus geopolitics in the future. This study also aims to fill the gap in the literature on the geopolitical consequences of the Nagorno-Karabakh problem in the South Caucasus 21th year and the reflections of the geopolitical change in the region.
