Piece - whole relation in David Hockney's polaroid collages

English Pop Art artist David Hockney's polaroid collages and photo collages that were created in 1980's are analysed in this thesis named as " Piece-Whole Relation in David Hockney's Polaroid Collages". These works reflecting Hockney's unique style are considered as innovative and original collage samples as well as having a distinguished reputation in the world of art history. David Hockney created these collages over the same period when he started taking photographs. In this period, Hockney took many photographs but he could not achieve his goal with these pictures. These photographs that were dominated by only one moment and a stable perspective constituted an approach which had to be worked on and also improved by Hockney. In order to minimize these failures, Hockney combined his collage techniques which had been created by Picasso and Braque and been under the influence of Cubism. With this approach, he formed various pieces of art. Hockney started with polaroid photographs and then carried on his artistic period with 35 mm film. He overlapped thousands of pictures on a new surface which consisted of the changes of the same image from different perspectives and time segments. These collages which remind an immense puzzle have a suprising and inspiring effect on the spectator. In this thesis, David Hockney's polaroid collages and photo collages' content and technical features are analyzed. At the same time the art movements that have inspired the artist and other periods of his artistic career are also stated. The effect of technology and social context on his art works are over viewed. David Hockney has a unique place in terms of having a distinctive style from his colleagues with his motive to create new ways of art. Hockney's contributions to art and photography constitute this thesis' main focus.
