Opinions of students, teachers and administrators regarding BILSEM education programs in the context of values education

2020, Pages:XV+92 The aim of this research is to determine the opinions of students studying at, and teachers and administrators working in the Science and Art Centers in the context of values education. The study was carried out qualitatively. The sub-objectives of the research for the students are; to determine the opinions of Science and Art Centers (BILSEM) students about the adequacy of the values education they receive, the activities carried out regarding the values, how the values should be reflected in the lessons, the advantages/disadvantages of addressing the values in the lessons and which values should be addressed most. The sub-objectives of the research for teachers are; to determine the opinions of BILSEM teachers about the compatibility between the values education they give here and the BILSEM education program, what values students should acquire, the impact of value education on student success, and which of the BILSEM education stages are suitable for values education. The sub-objectives of the research for administrators are; to determine the opinions about the adequacy of the BILSEM education program on values education, the values that should be included most in the BILSEM education program, the advantages and limitations of the BILSEM education program in terms of values education, at which stage of the BILSEM education program should values values be included. The study group of the research consists of 10 middle school students, 10 teachers and three administrators from Diyarbakır BILSEM; nine middle school students, seven teachers, two administrators from Mardin Prof Dr. Aziz Sancar BILSEM; eight middle school students, 10 teachers and two administrators from Şanlıurfa BİLSEM, in the 2018-2019 academic year. Participants are determined on a voluntary basis. The research is qualitative and the phenomenological design is used. Semi-structured interview form was applied to the participants. In data analysis, content analysis method was used. When examined the results of the study according to the opinions of the students: it is seen that the students find the activities related to the values education carried out in BİLSEM sufficient, their teachers strive for this, but they think it would be better to establish a separate workshop for value education. Students stated that the activities related to the values in BILSEM are generally social responsibility projects. The majority of students find it appropriate to carry out the value education in the face of wrong behavior by allocating the agenda of that lesson to the missing value that causes such wrong behavior. Since mentioning the values in the lessons positively changes their behavior, students find it advantageous. Students think that the communal values should be taught the most, thereafter, the social and national values. When examined the results of the research according to the opinions of the teachers: while the teachers state that the BILSEM education program is suitable for the values education, they think that the program should be revised and the value education lesson should be included in to the program. Teachers stated that the priority should be given to the teaching of communal values, followed by national and philosophical values. The majority of teachers agree that the values education positively affects student achievement. The teachers think that the values education should be given at the support stage of the BILSEM education program stages. When examined the results of the research according to the opinions of the administrators: it is noteworthy that the administrators find the BILSEM educating program insufficient in terms of the values education. Administrators state that the program should be improved. The administrators stated that the values that should be primarily taught to the students are communal values, and then the national, social, environmental and innovative values afterwards. The administrators stated that the BILSEM education program is suitable for the values education activities, students have no anxiety to pass the class, and small class size. However, they count the students spending limited time in BILSEM as a disadvantage with respect to the value education. The administrators think that the values education should be given at the support stage, of the BILSEM education program stages. Various recommendations were made in line with the results of the study.
