Investigation the cartoons broadcasts on TRT Çocuk channel within the scope of values education

With the advancements in technology, media tools have gained greater importance in the world. Radio and television are evaluated as the easiest ones to access among the mass media. Nowadays, we see that television broadcasts are easily accessible and this plays an important role in shaping the social life. With the year of 2019, Covid 19 pandemic emerged and relationships though mass media have replaced face to face relations in this period. It is known that the individuals have become more inclined to pass their time watching television that in this period. In this process, children began to spend most of the day in front of the television. As children have passed most of their time watching television, television has become one of their primary sources of learning. In this regard, the content watched on TV has been of greater importance especially in early childhood where the fastest learning is experienced. According to the studies conducted, children mostly tend to watch cartoon series on TV. What children learn from watching these series as they spend their time in front of a TV has become significant. As value judgment of today's communities has been degraded, the importance of values education has increased. Early childhood in which the personality is rooted is regarded as the most effective period to enable children to acquire values. Children correlate themselves with a specific character in an animated cartoon series they watch on TV and start to see it as a role model and act like that character. Therefore, it is believed that the programs children watch on TV can be applicable for teaching values. In the present study, the cartoon series broadcasted on the TRT Çocuk channel was examined in terms of values education. Using content analysis, six episodes of 20 cartoon series were watched throughout the study. One hundred twenty episodes were watched at least five times and some notes related to the series were taken. These episodes were analyzed in the context of values education and the data obtained were presented quantitatively. In the research, frequency and percentage statistics techniques were used in line with the research purposes during the analysis of the data. Statistical analyzes were created using the SPSS 22.0 package program. The present study consists of four chapters in total. In the first chapter, some details related to the cartoon series were presented. In the second chapter, values education was addressed in general. In the third chapter, the methodological process was discussed and finally, the findings were analyzed in the fourth chapter. According to the results obtained, it was found that the cartoon series aired on the TRT Çocuk channel include values education in their contents. It is believed that the present research will form a basis for further studies.
