Özet (EN)

Mental Hospitals are places of interaction as being the living and meeting area of "patient", "staff" and "visitor" trio. Total institutions, in which the separation of inside and outside with high security elements are organized in an organized manner, are important structures in which we must turn our direction in analyzing the society. To draw attention to the mental hospital experience based on the knowledge of the subject, who performs his vital activities "inside", provides us with some data on the reality of not only the inside but the outside. There is a tension between the world of the individual (home world) and this new common world. The tension stated above determines the main problem and the scope of this study. The tension determines the sociality of the subject within the institution - its social destiny - and sets a direction for it. The second chapter that follows the introduction, entitled "The Adventure of Madness", discusses the historical process of madness and addresses the intervention styles that emerged as a restraining practice in almost every period of history. In this section, the reflections of medicalization and de-institutionalization on the phenomenon of madness, which is the point where the correction and restraint process has reached, and how they have changed the ways of intervention to madness. In addition, the effects of the mentioned change on the diagnosis and treatment process were evaluated, and the standardization process of madness and the establishment adventure of sociology as a research object were put forward. In the same section, the psychiatric diagnostic system in Turkey is located on a situation analysis for the current operation. In the third part, where Erving Goffman's -whose conceptual framework we benefit from in interpretation of the data- sociological knowledge production procedures are introduced, the "self theory" with Goffman's concept set and the problem of location between historiography and classification is included. The theory of self was read both around the phenomenon of madness and the traces of the Goffmanian method and Goffman's precursors were discussed; Thus, a bridge was established between the Goffmanian method and our thesis. In the fourth section, there is an ethnomethodological examination on the principles of the institutional culture of mental hospitals in the sample of Erenköy Ruh ve Sinir Hastalıkları Hastanesi, and how the mental logic of mental hospitals operates. With the generalizations reached as a result of analyzing the social relations, interactions and rituals in the hospital, "How is 'madness' managed in mental hospitals?", the question was tried to be answered; In other words, the social foundations of self-management and institution management are deciphered by depicting the types of interaction in the hospital space. As a result, it has been observed that the institution spreads the patient's civil life and thus individuals have a disease role, but it has been understood that this role includes the tactics developed against the institutional strategy of the hospital. KEY WORDS: Social Character of Mental Hospitals, Sociology of Madness, Corporate Management of Madness, Self Management of Madness
