Story writing of Demir Özlü

The purpose of this study named ?Story Writing of Demir Özlü? is to determine the common points of the writings of Demir Özlü writing after 1950 and the main lines of Turkish Story writing of this period. Understanding of the place of the writer in Turkish Story writing after 1950 has a point of view in that whether it contributes to Turkish Culture Life. In this study mainly the writings of Demir Özlü, his life and the features of the period in which he writes, understandings of his contemporaries and the properties of existentialism which is the main point of view of his stories are analyzed. The study consists of three parts. In the first part, the life of the writer, press publishers of his writings, his disposition and his art & literature understanding are analyzed; in the third part the common points of the story writing of the writer is tried to be determined. It is possible to divide the story writing of Demir Özlü into three periods by means of his works. The first period is dominated by the existentialist period, the second one is the period dominated by social point of view and the last period is the period of exile and post-exile. The character groups of his work consist of men, women, married couples, children and societies. It is also possible to categorize them according to their social status and physical characteristics. Generally, the characters are mainly policemen, watchmen, waiters and waitresses, spendthrifts, homosexuals, prostitutes etc. These characters introduced to the reader according to their social status and their religious belief have relationship with the writer. Settings are very important in his works. Settings can be a room, bar, patisserie or a city. Settings are generally streets, hotels, inns, restaurants, cafes, patisseries, hotels and rooms, religious buildings in which people worship such as masques, churches, cathedrals, countries and cities. 280 The basic theme of the story of Demir Özlü is the idea of existence and concepts about existence. Depression, hallucination, dream, looseness, sense of guiltiness, meaninglessness, nihilistic ideas and suicide, sexuality, drinking are the concepts about existence. The secondary themes of the stories are the concepts about existence. The secondary themes of the stories are the concepts about society and the point of view of the society such as ideology, alteration, religious belief, political events, social norms and imprisonment. The point of view of society is clearly seen in the works written in 1970. The tertiary themes seen in the stories are exile, alienation and loneliness. Loneliness and alienation are also concepts of existentialism. Demir Özlü, mostly story writer, also writes novels, essays, memories, diaries and articles, thinks that the main function of the story and novel is not to teach lesson. He always takes into consideration that story and novel are only fictions. However he writes about social matters, he avoids stressing his political ideas in his works. His political ideas can be seen only in his essays and articles.
